Super Eagles captain, William Troost-Ekong, has expressed his unwavering determination to be included in the starting lineup for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Ivory Coast.
Despite battling injuries, the 30-year-old defender is determined to make his mark in the eagerly awaited game on Sunday in Abidjan.
Troost-Ekong suffered an injury during Nigeria’s victory against Cote d’Ivoire in the team’s second Group A match, which forced him to withdraw from the final group game against Guinea-Bissau.
However, he made a remarkable comeback in the round of 16 matchup with Cameroon and has since participated in every game leading up to the championship.
In the semi-final match against South Africa, Troost-Ekong scored a crucial goal for Nigeria in the 67th minute.
Although South Africa equalized with a penalty kick in the 90th minute, Nigeria emerged victorious in the penalty shootout, with Troost-Ekong also scoring from the spot.
Anticipating the final against Ivory Coast, Troost-Ekong emphasized his determination not to miss this pivotal moment.
He acknowledged that the coach ultimately decides the starting lineup but assured fans that he would give his best to be in top form.
“I have been struggling with injury since the Ivory Coast game, and this is a moment I don’t want to miss. Even if it means playing with just one leg, I will give my all. The coach has the final say, but I will do everything I can to be in peak condition,” Troost-Ekong stated.
