Nigeria’s mobile network operator, 9mobile, is facing a sharp decline in its subscriber base, losing 6,079 customers over two months, according to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) report on mobile porting activities.

In November 2024, 9mobile saw 3,891 subscribers leave for other networks, while in December, it lost an additional 2,188.

This contrasts with competitors like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom, which recorded significantly lower outgoing porting numbers.

Incoming porting data further highlights 9mobile’s struggles. In November, MTN gained 3,019 subscribers, Airtel added 1,266, and Globacom secured 414, while 9mobile managed only 27 new customers.

By December, MTN continued to lead with 1,856 incoming porting activities, followed by Airtel (835) and Globacom (290), while 9mobile attracted just 17.

9mobile’s market share has plummeted to 1.9% in December 2024, a stark drop from its 15.7% share in 2015.

Its subscriber base remains stagnant at 3.2 million, while competitors like MTN, Airtel, and Globacom are growing.

MTN now holds 51% market share with 84.6 million subscribers, Airtel has 56.6 million, and Globacom reached 20.1 million by December 2024.
