Maryam Abacha, wife of former military ruler General Sani Abacha, has denied allegations that her late husband looted billions of dollars during his leadership in Nigeria. According to TVC, Mrs. Abacha firmly dismissed these accusations, stating that there is no credible evidence to prove such claims.
Speaking during her interview, Mrs. Abacha questioned the origin of the allegations. “Who is the witness of the monies that were being stashed? Did you see the signature or the evidence of any monies stashed abroad?” she asked.
She further alleged that the funds her husband reportedly set aside for Nigeria disappeared shortly after his passing. “And the monies that my husband kept for Nigeria, in a few months, the monies vanished. People are not talking about that,” she said.
Maryam Abacha criticised the persistent attention on her husband nearly thirty years after his death, suggesting that the motives may be influenced by division. “Why are you blaming somebody? Is that tribalism or a religious problem or what is the problem with Nigerians?” she asked.
She expressed frustration over what she believes is unfair judgment based on ethnicity or religion. “Why are we so bad towards each other? Because somebody is a northerner or a southerner, somebody is a Muslim or a Christian… It’s not fair.”
Mrs. Abacha also directed her concerns towards the media, urging them to contribute to national growth. “People are not that bad. Twenty-seven years ago, and you are still talking about Abacha. He must be very powerful and loved by Nigerians. We thank God for that,” she remarked.
She responded to comments about Nigeria’s economy during her husband’s rule, a time reportedly marked by stronger foreign reserves and lower external debt levels. “So, where did he steal the money from? So where would he have stolen the money from?” she asked. “And because Nigerians are fools, they listen to everything.”
Mrs. Abacha called on Nigerians to embrace unity and mutual respect, adding that no individual holds the key to the country’s future. “Babangida doesn’t make Nigeria alone. Abacha does not make Nigeria alone. Abiola and everybody, nobody is big enough for Nigeria. Even the single man on the street is very important. We are all human beings, for goodness’ sake. All these wahala should stop,” she concluded.
