The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has cancelled the results of the supplementary governorship election held in Adamawa State on Saturday, April 16.
The cancellation came after the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) of Adamawa State, Hudu Yunus Ari, announced the winner of the election, Aishat Dahiru, popularly known as Binani, of the All Progressives Congress (APC), before the collation of results was completed.
The announcement by Ari was made midway into the collation process, which contravened the Electoral Act (2022), where only the Returning Officer is empowered to declare the winner of an election.
The incumbent governor, Ahmadu Fintiri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was leading before the announcement.
Following the announcement, PDP members in the state protested the result, and some areas experienced pockets of violence before INEC issued a statement condemning the action of the REC.
INEC has invited the REC, Returning Officer, and all involved in the announcement of Binani as the winner to the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja immediately.
The governorship election held on March 18 was declared inconclusive due to some votes being cancelled and the inability to hold the election in some parts of the state.
Fintiri had the highest number of votes cast in the March 18 election, polling 421,524 votes, while Binani secured 390,275 votes. Fintiri won in 13 of Adamawa’s 21 local government areas, while Binani won in eight LGAs in the first round of the exercise.
During the supplementary election, Fintiri was leading in the votes counted in 10 out of the 20 local government areas before the announcement of Binani as the winner.
INEC has declared the announcement of Binani as the winner null, void, and of no effect, and has suspended the collation of results of the supplementary election.
It is yet to be known what the outcome of the governorship election will be, as INEC is expected to address the issue and take appropriate action to ensure that the will of the people is upheld in the Adamawa governorship election.
