The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) may zone the Senate presidency to the South East region of Nigeria.

The move is believed to be an attempt to appease the zone, and several lawmakers from the region are reportedly eyeing the position.

Among those named as possible candidates are Senators Orji Uzor Kalu, Osita Izunaso, Jibrin Barau, Sani Musa, Godswill Akpabio, and Ali Ndume, as well as former governors Abdulaziz Yari, David Umahi, and Adams Oshiomhole.

It remains unclear which of these lawmakers might receive the nod from President-elect Bola Tinubu and the APC.

There are also reports that Akpabio, who is speculated to be a contender for the Senate presidency, is exploring the possibility of a ministerial appointment instead.

He is said to be seeking either the Petroleum or Niger Delta ministerial seats, which are considered more favorable than the Senate presidency.

According to the source, the APC and the President-elect are committed to forming a government of national unity and addressing restiveness in various regions of the country.

One way to do this is by giving the South East the opportunity to produce the next Senate President.

The party is also said to be considering candidates from the North West and Central for the position of House of Representatives Speaker.

Meanwhile, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila reportedly met with some of the House of Representatives Speaker aspirants to discuss the issue of a preferred candidate.

However, a source close to the Speaker denied that he had asked anyone to step down, saying that the meeting was intended to address campaign strategies and any potential problems among the aspirants.

Some of the aspirants reportedly raised concerns that the Speaker’s staff members were using his name to support a particular candidate, but these concerns were reportedly resolved.

The race for leadership positions in the National Assembly is always a contentious one, with different regions and factions within political parties vying for influence.

The decision to potentially zone the Senate presidency to the South East is an attempt to address some of the concerns and grievances of that region, and to ensure that the party maintains a semblance of unity as it moves forward.

However, as the source noted, it remains to be seen which of the potential candidates will ultimately receive the party’s backing.
