APC Turns a Blind Eye to Obasanjo-Atiku Talks; Peter Obi and NNPP Hold Key Decisions

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed concerns over a recent meeting between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar, stating it poses no threat to President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election.

According to Naija News, APC National Secretary, Senator Ajibola Basiru, downplayed the meeting, calling it a gathering of “indolent politicians” with no real impact on the political landscape. He emphasized that APC is focused on governance and the upcoming Anambra governorship election.

Atiku and his entourage, including former Governors Aminu Tambuwal and Liyel Imoke, visited Obasanjo in Abeokuta, sparking speculation about an opposition coalition for 2027.

While Atiku insisted it was a courtesy visit, sources claim discussions centered on uniting opposition forces.

Opposition’s Response

Atiku has previously pushed for opposition alliances, warning against Nigeria becoming a one-party state.

Meanwhile, Labour Party’s 2023 candidate, Peter Obi, expressed openness to a coalition but stressed it must serve national interest and align with principles of good governance. His media aide, Ibrahim Umar, reiterated that transparency and accountability are key.

Labour Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that no official coalition talks had taken place, stating any decision would require broad party approval.

NNPP’s Take

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) welcomed the idea of a coalition, especially under a respected leader like Obasanjo. Party spokesman Ladipo Johnson stated that a meaningful alliance could restore hope to Nigerians.
