Raheem Sterling scored his first goal for Arsenal in a 5-1 League Cup victory over Bolton, marking his first start since moving from Chelsea on transfer deadline day.
Arteta made seven changes from Arsenal’s recent 2-2 Premier League draw with Manchester City, including handing a debut to 16-year-old goalkeeper Jack Porter.
At 16 years and 72 days, Porter became Arsenal’s youngest-ever starter, surpassing Cesc Fabregas’ previous record.
Porter had a solid debut but conceded a goal when Bolton’s Aaron Collins rounded him to score.
Arsenal took control early with Declan Rice opening the scoring in the 16th minute, followed by two goals from 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri, his first for the club.
Sterling scored after Bukayo Saka’s cross was fumbled by Bolton’s keeper, and Kai Havertz added a fifth in the 78th minute to complete the rout.
Arteta praised Sterling’s performance noting that he still needs to improve, “He needs to get to the level we require, but it was a massive step today.”
Arsenal will face Preston in the fourth round of the competition.
