Arsenal have made the decision to terminate the contract of winger Nicolas Pepe, following his disappointing spell at the club.
The Ivorian international joined the Gunners in 2019 in a record-breaking £72 million deal from Lille.
However, his time at the north London club did not live up to expectations, resulting in his departure for free after 27 goals in 111 appearances.
Arsenal announced the termination of Pepe’s contract on their official website, stating:
“We have agreed with Nicolas to terminate his contract with immediate effect.”
This decision comes as Pepe was set to make a move to Turkish Super Lig side Trabzonspor.
Pepe spent last season on loan at Ligue 1 side Nice, where he hoped to reignite his career.
However, his performances failed to impress, and a move away from Arsenal became inevitable.
Trabzonspor is expected to be his next destination, although Besiktas and a potential move to Saudi Arabia were also rumoured.
Arsenal thanked Pepe for his contribution during his time at the club, stating:
“Everyone at Arsenal thanks Nicolas for his contribution during his time with us and wishes him well for the future.”
At 28 years old, Pepe still has time to revive his career and make an impact elsewhere.
It remains to be seen whether a change of scenery will bring out the best in the talented winger.
