Aston Villa legend and European Cup winner Gary Shaw has passed away at the age of 63 following injuries from a fall at his Birmingham home.
Shaw was born in Solihulland he was a key figure in Villa’s historic achievements in the early 1980s.
He joined the club as an apprentice, making his debut in the 1978-79 season, and soon became an integral part of the team.
Shaw’s partnership with Peter Withe was crucial in Villa’s successful campaign, leading to championship titles, including the First Division title in 1981 and the coveted European Cup in 1982.
Over his career with Aston Villa, he scored an impressive 79 goals in 213 appearances, earning accolades such as the PFA Young Player of the Year in 1981.
His career was affected by a serious knee injury in 1983, but he continued to play for Villa until 1988, later representing Blackpool, Walsall, Kilmarnock, and Shrewsbury Town before retiring in 1992.
After retiring, Shaw worked as a statistical analyst and served as a club ambassador for Villa.
