Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reaffirmed that forming a coalition is the only realistic way to remove President Bola Tinubu from office in the 2027 election.
According to Naija News, Atiku made this statement after 11 governors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) openly rejected any move toward a merger or alliance with other opposition groups.
The PDP Governors’ Forum, led by Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, met in Ibadan on Monday and concluded that the party would not support any coalition effort. Instead, they insisted that the PDP would remain an independent opposition force.
Governor Mohammed explained that while the PDP would not merge with any other party, it was still open to accepting new members. He said any party, individual, or group could join the PDP to help return it to power in 2027.
Atiku, responding through his media aide Paul Ibe, expressed disappointment over the governors’ stance. However, he emphasized that the mission to unseat the current administration was a people-driven cause.
He called the proposed alliance a national movement with momentum that cannot be ignored. “This is a pan-Nigerian movement – a Nigerian project with Nigerians at its heart. It’s difficult to derail something when the people have taken ownership of it,” he said.
Atiku also stated that the rejection by PDP governors only shows the need for deeper consultations. He maintained that the coalition would move forward and that more alignments and realignments would follow in time.
While recognizing the significance of the governors in party politics, he pointed out that ordinary Nigerians were just as important to the success of the coalition plan.
As the 2027 election draws closer, the push for opposition unity continues to stir debate, and Atiku remains firm in his belief that cooperation is the key to change.
