Julian Nagelsmann has announced that Bayern Munich defender, Joshua Kimmich will be Germany’s new captain.

Kimmich will lead the team in the upcoming Nations League matches, starting with a game against Hungary in Düsseldorf on Saturday, followed by a clash with the Netherlands in Amsterdam on Tuesday.

Nagelsmann also appointed Antonio Rüdiger and Kai Havertz as alternate captains.

Speaking at a press conference at the national team’s base in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria, Nagelsmann said, “Josh was one of the three captains at the European Championship, so it’s logical that if the others aren’t there, he’s the (leading) candidate.

Kimmich is someone who always goes full throttle, sometimes too much. He always wants to win.”

The choice of Kimmich to captain the team came as no surprise, especially since previous captain Ilkay Gündogan announced his retirement from the national team last month.

Germany’s 1990 World Cup-winning captain Lothar Matthäus had predicted Kimmich’s appointment, stating, “I’d be surprised if it wasn’t Kimmich. He has the most international caps (91). He also has the ambition and the experience.”

Kimmich himself was not unexpectedly chosen for the role.

“I was deputy captain at the European Championship. Ilkay has now retired, so the roles are being redistributed,” he commented post Bayern’s win over Freiburg.

With 91 appearances, Kimmich is now the most experienced player on the team, followed by Rüdiger, Havertz, and Marc-André ter Stegen.

As captain, Kimmich will play a crucial role in guiding Germany through a new era, following the departures of longtime stalwarts like Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, and Thomas Müller.
