Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are gathering in Abuja, Nigeria for an emergency meeting to discuss the recent coup in Niger.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, will preside over the meeting.

Several African leaders, including the transitional President of Chad, the President of Guinea-Bissau, and the President of Togo, have already arrived at the venue.

Other leaders from Senegal, Benin Republic, Ghana, and The Gambia, among others, are also expected to attend.

President Tinubu had previously expressed strong opposition to coups in Africa, and shortly after his statement, news broke that the military had successfully taken control in Niger.
