Nathan Jones Sacked As Southampton Manager

Southampton have confirmed the sadly inevitable situation that Nathan Jones has been sacked as manager after just three months in charge.

This decision was triggered by a dismal 2-1 home defeat to fellow strugglers Wolves on Saturday – and with Southampton at the bottom of the Premier League table.

Not only did Jones’ team only take one point from the last 13 games, but his recent post-match comments angered supporters enough to seek his replacement.

The short statement released by Saints confirming his dismissal also confirmed that Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan had left alongside him and that Rubén Sellés had been appointed Lead Coach and would be preparing the team for their next game against Chelsea.

Jones spoke out on his last game, conceding Southampton’s nervousness during the match in which they were reduced to ten men after Mario Lemina’s sending-off.

He accepted that there were elements of pride in their performance but commented on their inability to make chances count, registering just two shots on target from seventeen attempts.

These poor results and performances follow Ralph Hasenhuttl’s earlier departure in November – making Nathan Jones the 8th Premier League boss casualty this season – joining Jesse Marsch of Leeds United, Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel, Steven Gerrard, Bruno Lage and Scott Parker out of a job.
