A Catholic priest named Charles Igechi was tragically shot dead on Wednesday while on his way back to St. Michael College in Ikhueniro, Edo State, where he served as vice principal.

The incident was confirmed by the Catholic Archbishop of Benin City, Augustine Akubeze, who called for prayers for the repose of the slain priest’s soul.

The priest’s remains were found in Ikpoba Hill, Ikpoba Okha Local Government Area of Edo State, and the incident has been reported to the appropriate security agency.

The killing of Catholic priests is unfortunately not uncommon in Nigeria, with 39 priests killed and 30 abducted in 2022 alone.

This is part of the wider insecurity across Nigeria, which has seen hundreds of people killed and kidnapped in the past year.

The new Nigerian president, Bola Tinubu, recently held his first security council meeting and tasked security chiefs to share information and design a new framework to tackle the security challenges.
