Chaim Topol, an Israeli actor and singer who was best known for playing Tevye the Milkman in Fiddler on the Roof, has passed away at 87 years old.

He leaves behind a long Hollywood career and a lasting impression he made on audiences everywhere.

In 1971, Topol was given a Golden Globe award for his performance in the movie adaptation of Fiddler, and was nominated for best actor at the Academy Awards.

His charisma and talent led him to other roles such as Galileo Galilei in the film Galileo, Dr Hans Zarkov in Flash Gordon and James Bond’s ally Milos Columbo in For Your Eyes Only.

As well as countless stage shows throughout his lifetime, he also wrote and illustrated books, founded a nonprofit for children with special needs and was eventually awarded the Israel Prize.

Chaim Topol left an impact both within Israel where he began his entertainment career at 18 by enlisting into an entertainment troupe singing and acting on the road; as well across much of the world through his iconic roles.

He will be dearly missed.
