In a much-needed relief for Chelsea fans, Wesley Fofana’s header against Leeds brought an end to their goal drought and ended a spell of three straight defeats.
The 1-0 win wasn’t pretty, but it was all that mattered after more than 400 minutes without a goal.
The win came just in time as Chelsea now heads into the crucial Champions League last-16 second leg with boosted spirits.
Though Kai Havertz missed his chances, and Joao Felix rattled the bar in the first half, Fofana saved the day with his game-winning goal from Ben Chilwell’s corner.
It was especially important as Chelsea were missing Thiago Silva for six weeks due to injury while Reece James was also absent.
In what was a patched-up defense, Fofana stepped up alongside Benoit Badiashile to start on either side of Kalidou Koulibably in a new-look backline.
Chilwell looked good at wing-back, being the consistent threat throughout.
However, despite keeping most of the possession in their favor, Chelsea still looked desperately short of goals and struggled to lead the line with Havertz again failing to attack some of Chilwell’s inviting deliveries.
