According to reports, Romelu Lukaku will be returning to Chelsea at the end of his loan spell at Inter Milan, despite his desire to remain in Italy.

The Belgian striker, who joined Chelsea from Inter for £98m in the summer of 2021, has struggled for consistency at the San Siro, scoring just seven goals in 24 games and missing significant periods of the season due to injury.

Inter, who are under financial pressure, will have to make savings this summer and are unable to afford the potential cost of another move for Lukaku.

The club has recorded losses of €784m (£694m) over the past 10 years and has an annual operating loss of about €150m (£133m).

As a result, Lukaku will reportedly return to Chelsea ‘against his will’. However, the forward has expressed his desire to stay at Inter and is willing to take a pay cut.

Chelsea, who posted heavy losses of £121m in their latest financial accounts, may need to sell players to balance the books, and Lukaku had been seen as a potential asset they could move on.

Inter, on the other hand, have reportedly been eyeing Marcus Thuram, Roberto Firmino, Mateo Retegui, and Lois Openda as potential replacements for Lukaku for next season.
