Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has expressed sorrow over the passing of former Super Eagles captain and coach, Christian Chukwu. He described the football legend as a “titan” whose impact went beyond the pitch.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the governor shared his heartfelt tribute on Saturday, calling Chukwu’s death a deep personal loss to the people of Enugu and the entire country. Mbah referred to Chukwu as a “phenomenon” who united Nigeria through his contributions to the game.
Christian Chukwu’s football journey brought pride to both Enugu State and Nigeria at large. His legacy includes leading the Green Eagles to victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations and coaching the Super Eagles as well as Kenya’s national team, Harambee Stars.
Mbah praised his service to African football, particularly his time with Enugu’s Rangers International and Nigeria’s national team. He noted that Chukwu’s influence went far beyond sport, touching lives and building unity across communities.
“Christian Chukwu was a national icon, a football titan, field marshal, and phenomenon,” the governor said in his statement. “His exploits as a footballer united the country across ethnic divides and creeds.”
Governor Mbah offered his condolences to Chukwu’s family, the Enugu community, and the Nigerian sports world. He ended his message by praying for the peaceful rest of the late football legend.
