CLE Suspends Law Admissions in 9 Nigerian Universities, Grants Provisional Approvals

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has suspended admissions into the law faculties of nine Nigerian universities, citing their failure to obtain necessary accreditation. The affected institutions include:

  1. Nigerian Police Academy, Wudil, Kano State
  2. Fountain University, Osogbo, Osun State
  3. Redeemers University, Ede, Osun State
  4. Taraba State University, Jalingo
  5. Western Delta University, Oghara, Delta State
  6. Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete
  7. Bingham University, Karu, Nasarawa State
  8. Crescent University, Abeokuta, Ogun State
  9. Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State

Additionally, Lead City University in Ibadan, Oyo State, has been placed under a five-year moratorium due to inadequate infrastructure and repeated violations of admission quotas. The CLE plans to accommodate over 1,000 students unlawfully admitted by Lead City University within available spaces.

In response, KWASU has refuted claims of suspension, asserting that its law programs are fully accredited by both the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the CLE. The university emphasized that it has adhered to an admission quota of 50 students per session since obtaining accreditation in 2021.

The CLE also granted provisional accreditation to El-Amin University and Newgate University, both in Minna, Niger State, each with an admission quota of 50 students. The University of Abuja’s admission quota has been increased from 100 to 160 students due to improvements in infrastructure and staffing.

Prospective law students are advised to verify the accreditation status of universities before applying to ensure their qualifications will be recognized.
