Sonia, the daughter of former deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, expressed her guilt over her parents’ conviction in an interview with BBC.

She revealed that her parents were looking for a solution to her health condition, Nephrotic syndrome, which causes the body to pass too much protein in urine.

In March 2023, a UK jury found Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice, and a doctor, Obinna Obeta, guilty of criminally conspiring to exploit a 21-year-old Lagos street trader for his kidney.

The young man was falsely presented as Sonia’s cousin in a failed bid to persuade doctors to carry out an £80,000 private procedure at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

Ekweremadu was sentenced to nine years and eight months, Beatrice to four years and six months, and Obeta to 10 years in prison.

Sonia, who was also on trial but not convicted, disagreed with the verdict and expressed her support for her parents.

She acknowledged that things will never be the same and that she feels guilty for being the reason behind her parents’ conviction.
