Heavy flooding in Libya has resulted in approximately 10,000 people missing, according to an official from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
The floods, caused by dams bursting during a storm, have caused significant destruction in the eastern city of Derna, with about a quarter of the city being destroyed.
So far, over 1,000 bodies have been recovered, and the death toll is expected to rise into the thousands.
The IFRC is considering launching an appeal for emergency funding to assist the flood victims, who are facing challenges in accessing basic health facilities, shelter, and food.
The country’s political division and collapsed public services since the 2011 insurgency have further exacerbated the situation.
