The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has obtained an arrest warrant for former Nigerian Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, and has initiated extradition proceedings.

Alison-Madueke appeared before a Westminster Magistrates Court in London, where she gave her name, date of birth, and address.

The former minister, who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan, is being charged by the British government for receiving bribes in exchange for awarding oil contracts.

Alison-Madueke’s lawyer stated that she intends to enter a not-guilty plea.

She fled Nigeria in 2015 following plans by the new administration to prosecute her for corruption allegations.

Alison-Madueke is the second high-profile Nigerian politician to face prosecution in Britain, following former Governor of Delta State, James Ibori.

Alison-Madueke was arrested in London in 2015 and charged in August with six bribery offences.

She has spent the past eight years on police bail in London.

Her next court appearance will be on 30 October at Southwark Crown Court.

The EFCC has also obtained an arrest warrant for Alison-Madueke and has initiated extradition proceedings.
