Nigeria’s anti-graft agency, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), has arrested and detained Wale Akinterinwa, a former commissioner of finance under the late Rotimi Akeredolu, ex-governor of Ondo State. Akinterinwa is also one of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship aspirants in Ondo State.
Investigation into Alleged Mismanagement of Funds
Akinterinwa’s detention is in connection with the ongoing investigation into his seven-year tenure as commissioner for finance. He is being probed for alleged mismanagement of billions of naira. Sources reveal that Akinterinwa had been invited by the EFCC for questioning a few weeks ago but had failed to honor the invitation, citing being “too busy.”
Voluntarily Reporting to the EFCC
However, a few days before the APC governorship primary election in Ondo State, Akinterinwa decided to show up at the EFCC office in Abuja. The EFCC had chosen to remain silent about his detention to avoid influencing the primary election.
“Akinterinwa voluntarily reported to the EFCC in Abuja. He was taken into custody for questioning. His detention is not politically motivated,” a source stated.
As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen how this development will impact Akinterinwa’s aspirations in the APC governorship primary.
