Elon Musk has announced that Twitter will be purging inactive accounts from the social media platform.
The move is part of Musk’s plan to free up abandoned handles and make usernames available to other users.
The Twitter chief had already expressed interest in purging inactive accounts last November, and in the following month, he announced that Twitter would soon start freeing up usernames of 1.5 billion accounts.
Musk tweeted on Monday that Twitter will be purging accounts that have had no activity for several years, which will likely result in a drop in follower count.
While many users have asked if there will be a way to memorialize accounts of deceased users, Musk hinted that deleted accounts will be archived.
The move comes as Twitter continues to make changes to the platform to boost revenue, including monetizing its user verification process and charging companies for access to its Application Programming Interface.
Musk has also expressed support for content creators on the platform, stating that their support is “very much appreciated.”
