Ex-Chelsea player Frank Lampard was stunned to learn that his face was found stamped on bricks of methamphetamine in a £38 million drug bust in Australia.
The Australian Federal Police seized two duffel bags containing the ‘ice meth,’ each brick featuring an image of Lampard giving a thumbs up, taken during a lap of honor at Stamford Bridge in 2017.
The alleged trafficker, Richard Prothero, was arrested in a car park in Sydney and charged with attempting to possess a commercial quantity of border-controlled drugs.
The shipment of methamphetamine, weighing 95 kg, had been traced back to Los Angeles before it arrived in East Sydney.
Upon hearing the bizarre news, Lampard expressed his disbelief outside his West London home, stating,
‘Yeah, you probably know my answer on that one.’
‘What am I gonna say about that? I’m not aware of it.
‘I don’t even know what to say to you to be honest. I’ve literally no comment on that.’
Reports suggest that the perpetrator may be a Chelsea supporter, which could explain the odd branding of the illicit substance.
Australian Federal Police Detective Chief Superintendent Kristie Cressy highlighted the social harm caused by methamphetamine, noting over 10,100 hospitalizations related to the drug in Australia during 2021-2022.
The police emphasized their commitment to combating organized crime in the country.
This incident recalls a similar case from 2012 when Lampard’s former teammate John Terry took legal action against a cigarette company for using his image without permission.
