Former Manchester United star Memphis Depay has been sentenced to a four-month suspended prison term and a two-year driving ban after being convicted of drink-driving.
The incident occurred last August in Monaco, where Depay drove his Rolls Royce after leaving a nightclub.
He was stopped by police, and a breathalyzer test revealed his blood alcohol concentration was 1.01 per milliliter, exceeding Monaco’s legal limit.
Following the court ruling, Depay offered a heartfelt apology on Instagram, acknowledging his mistake.
“I would like to come on here and apologise,” said Depay.
“Last summer during my holidays in Monaco I made a mistake and decided to drive home after having some drinks in a restaurant.
In addition to the suspended sentence and driving ban, Depay was fined €9,000 (£7,500).
Depay moved to Barcelona in 2021 and later played for Atletico Madrid before joining Brazilian club Corinthians in October.
Since his arrival in Brazil, he has scored seven goals in 18 appearances.
Reflecting on his move, Depay shared that his decision was driven by a desire to find happiness and stay true to himself.
He praised the unique energy of Brazilian football, calling it the “Mecca of football”.
