A recent radio program on 101.7 YES FM, Ibadan featured Tawfiq Akinwale, the former governorship candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in Oyo state, making allegations against President-elect Bola Tinubu.
Akinwale claimed that Tinubu asked Professor Pat Utomi to step down for Peter Obi in the lead-up to the 2023 general elections.
According to Akinwale, Utomi had already secured the LP’s ticket, but Tinubu saw an opportunity to reduce the winning chances of the presidential candidate of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar, by urging Utomi to step down for Obi.
Akinwale also alleged that Tinubu funded Obi’s campaign through Utomi, whom he described as Tinubu’s “son”.
However, Obi’s presidential campaign became more popular and threatening than Tinubu had anticipated.
In an interview published in 2022, Professor Utomi explained that he relinquished his presidential aspiration under the Labour Party for Peter Obi because he believed Obi was younger and more energetic in handling the affairs of the nation if he emerged victorious at the 2023 polls.
