Former coach of the Chinese national football team and ex-Everton player, Li Tie has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for bribery as part of a broader anti-corruption effort in Chinese sports.
The 47-year-old was convicted of accepting and giving bribes amounting to 120 million yuan ($16.5 million) between 2015 and 2021, including during his time as national coach.
He had earlier confessed to arranging nearly $421,000 in bribes to secure his coaching position and to fix Chinese Super League matches, as revealed in a January CCTV documentary.
Li pleaded guilty in court in March.
This case is part of a larger crackdown on corruption in Chinese football, which has been marred by match-fixing and bribery scandals since the late 1990s.
The Chinese government, under President Xi Jinping’s anti-corruption campaign, has intensified efforts to clean up the sport.
Earlier this year, former Chinese Football Association head Chen Xuyuan was sentenced to life in prison for bribery, and several other football officials received prison terms.
In addition, 38 players and five club officials were given life bans in September after a two-year investigation into match-fixing, which implicated 41 clubs and 120 fixed matches.
Despite Xi’s aspirations for China to host and win the World Cup, the national team continues to struggle, currently ranked 90th in the world by FIFA, just above Curacao.
