Recently, an image has been circulating on social media claiming to show a meeting between Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu and Labour Party’s Peter Obi.
The caption of the post reads: ‘Finally, Peter Obi meets President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Aso Rock, Abuja.’ However, after conducting a thorough investigation, it has been revealed that this image is fake and should be ignored.
Africa Check, a fact-checking organization, previously exposed a manipulated image of President Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, meeting the former Anambra governor. Now, they have analyzed the suspicious image of Tinubu and Obi and found several inconsistencies.
A Google reverse image search led to the discovery of photos showing President Tinubu and Aliko Dangote meeting at Tinubu’s private residence. Dangote, being one of the richest men in Africa, attracts media attention with his movements. This meeting was reported on 12 May by Legit, a news platform in Nigeria.
Comparing these authentic photos with the suspicious image, it becomes evident that the latter has been digitally manipulated.
While Tinubu is wearing the same clothes and the background is identical, Dangote has been replaced with Obi, and a presidential portrait has been edited into the background. Furthermore, an unidentified man has been added to the foreground of the image.
Additionally, the phrase ‘caveat lector’ can be found in the bottom left-hand corner of the suspicious image. This Latin phrase translates to ‘let the reader beware’ and serves as another indication of the image’s inauthenticity.
In conclusion, there is no evidence to support the claim that Tinubu and Obi had a meeting. The image circulating on social media is a result of digital manipulation and should be disregarded.
