Former England manager Gareth Southgate has quickly moved on to a new role as a UEFA technical observer after stepping down from his position with the national team in July.
Southgate left his post after eight years in charge following back-to-back European Championship final defeats, first to Italy in Euro 2020 and most recently to Spain in Euro 2024.
In his new role, the 54-year-old will observe games in a more comprehensive manner, analyzing trends and player development rather than focusing solely on tactics, similar to managers like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Roberto Martinez, who have taken on similar roles.
Southgate was rumored to be a potential replacement for Manchester United‘s Erik ten Hag during the summer and has reportedly attracted the interest of new United shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe.
While Southgate takes time away from management, interim England boss Lee Carsley has stepped up from his U21 role to lead the national team.
Carsley will guide the team through crucial UEFA Nations League matches, starting with the Republic of Ireland and Finland.
Although the search for a permanent manager continues, Carsley’s primary goal is to ensure continuity and lead the team to promotion.
