Google Pixel 3 XL Specs, Review & Price in Nigeria

The last year Pixels are still putting up a big fight with some flagships of 2018 when it comes to photography. You can imagine what the Google Pixel 3 Xl and Pixel 3 that happen to ships with more capable camera will be in that department. Well i will tell you, they are king at least when it comes to taking pictures as it is a whole new story when it comes to shooting videos with it.Google pixel 3 xl

Pixel 3 and its XL variants are one of the best smartphones launched in the just passed tech month (October) of 2018 that saw the announcement of series of tech gadgets and upgrade of operating systems (Windows, iOS, MacOS, WatchOS).

The 2018 pixels ships with the same software and hardware with the exception of screen size, screen resolution and battery. In 2018, manufacturers are getting smarter as the only discrepancies between their big and small phones are in screen and battery. That’s a nice and welcome development if you ask me. However, i will still love it if they can find way to squeeze in the same battery.

Google Pixel 3 XL & Pixel 3 Review.

Just looking at the back of the 2017 and 2018 pixel smartphones, you will quickly notice they have chose to stuck to the same design (two tone back) but of course with improvement in build quality. However, there have been huge refreshment in the hardware especially the camera department.display of pixel 3 and 3 xl

Design & Display.

The new pixels front and back are made out of hardened glass which probably makes them seems heavier with aluminium frame. The sim card slot has been shifted to the bottom right corner and all the buttons are on the right. With the absent of 3.5mm headphone jack, the left side and top of the devices are blank.

If you are going to be using this device without a case, you will need to be very careful because it is sort of slippery and that is probably due to the glass material used on both the front and back.

The glass material however has brought the wireless charging features to the 2018 pixels. Don’t worry the wireless charging still works with the case. Available colors include Black, White, Pink and except on the black color variants, the pixels have distinct power button color. For example, the power button is orange in color.

In addition to the new charging feature, they are also IP68 certified making them dust and water resistance. Since we are talking of special features, i won’t want to forget to mention that the squeeze to trigger Google Assistance feature still works great in this new flagships. The fingerprint scanner is still behind the device.

There is no talking about the Google Pixel 3 Xl without mentioning the unusually big notch and chin on them. I would have taught the essence of the notch display was to make room for more screen and less bezels but the pixel have longer notch, though not as wide as that of the iPhone XS Max and also big chin. Inside the notch are two front facing camera and large, clear front facing stereo speaker.

The Pixel 3 on the other hand does not have notch, it is a 5.5-inch OLED display with 2160 x 1080 pixels screen resolution while the XL is a 6.3-inch OLED display with 2960 x 1440 pixels screen resolution.

Performance, Software & Memory.

The 2018 pixels are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 (10nm) SoC with Adreno 630 GPU on board. The Octa Core processor is a combination of Quad 2.5 GHz Kryo 385 Gold and another Quad 1.6 GHz Kryo 385 Silver cores.

It runs on pure Android 9.0 Pie directly out of the box. The software is greatly optimized for fast and smooth performance as well as management of RAM and battery using AI and machine learning.

The processing power on both devices is assisted by 4GB RAM, paired with either 64GB or 128GB internal memory. Sorry, there is no slot for external storage.

Camera, Battery & Connectivity.

The major highlight of the device is the camera. You heard that right, the camera are so superb. Google have managed to break their own record as they took the pixel 2 and pixel 2 xl already great camera and make it even better.

At the time when all the big players in the industry have adopted the use of at least two rear camera to makes photography better, Google sticked to just one camera and guess what, it still takes better pictures than them all. However, their is an on going debate about whether the 2018 pixels camera is actually better than the Huawei P20 Pro’s.

However, like i said earlier, as great as the images taken with this camera are, the video quality can’t be compared to that of the iPhone XS max that support 4K recording and doesn’t have issue of over exposure and average quality audio (for video recording).

Among the top features of the 12MP, f/1.8 aperture with OIS rear camera are top shot, night sight, super res zoom, google lens, create and play, motion autofocus (making image staying in focus), dynamic range, autofocus and portrait mode.

Its dual 8MP (wide, f/1.8 aperture) + 8MP (ultra-wide, f/2.2 aperture) selfie camera also beat the industry standard. Sorry guys, no facial recognition support for its front facing camera.

No wonder the Pixel 3 Xl is called the best camera phone thanks to great work Google team put into the image processing and machine learning.

The Pixle 3 XL is packed wih 3430 mAh while the Pixel 3 is packed with 2915 mAh battery. It supports wireless charging and comes with 18W fast charger. With the software and processor, you should have no problem going through the day without charging for the XL and maybe a top up at the night for the Pixel 3.

Connectivity wise, the headphone jack is gone but it comes with headphone to type c connector and pair of usb c headphones in the box. It supports 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC and Wi-Fi. Another great feature is the Google duplex that allows caller to talk to assistance (screen call) before you can decide to speak to him/her or end the call.

These are great device with numerous capabilities and technological breakthroughs.
