The Recording Academy, the organization behind the prestigious Grammy Awards, has come under fire for referring to Nigerian afrobeat superstar, Ayo Balogun, popularly known as Wizkid, as an “up-and-coming artiste.”
The controversial description was used in a post on the Academy’s Instagram story, where they asked their followers to name an up-and-coming Black artist everyone should have on their radar.
Wizkid’s name was listed in response to the question, sparking outrage among fans who consider him one of the most successful music artists in Africa.
Many have criticized the Academy for being disrespectful and demeaning towards the artist.
