A detachment of officers from the Lagos State Police Command has dispersed students who gathered at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) to protest against a recent fee hike.

The police used teargas to disperse the students, who were led by a student solidarity group in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).

The fee hike, which was implemented by the UNILAG management in July 2023, has been met with strong opposition from the student community. The university cited ‘prevailing economic realities’ as the reason for the increase.

According to The Nation, the police had stationed their patrol vehicles with officers along strategic routes leading to the university.

The protesters carried placards with various inscriptions and chanted anti-government songs to express their displeasure.

During the dispersal, four protesters, including Femi Adeyeye and Philip Olatinwo, were arrested and taken away in a police van.

In response to the incident, Omoyele Sowore, the Presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, tweeted, ‘The Management of @UnilagNigeria and the @policeng must ensure immediate release of @activistfemi and others illegally arrested during the protest.’
