The Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt has overturned a warrant of arrest issued by a Rivers State High Court against former Governor Rotimi Amaechi and five others in a criminal case brought by the state government.
The warrant, issued by Justice Chiwendu Nwogu in May 2023, was challenged at the Appeal Court, which ruled unanimously that the High Court had erred in proceeding with the case while it was under appeal.
The Appeal Court also set aside the warrant of arrest and criticized the process of serving the defendants.
Counsel for Amaechi and the other defendants hailed the ruling as a victory against the “illegality” of the former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.
