The Nigerian government is working on a plan to deliver passports to Nigerians anywhere in the world using the speed mail service of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST).
The Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, announced this during the opening of the Nigeria Immigration Passport Front Desk Office in Edo State.
The government is in the final stages of negotiations with NIPOST to make this service available to Nigerians worldwide.
The Minister also revealed that Edo State has one of the highest passport applications in Nigeria, and the waiting time between application and collection may increase due to demand.
However, the government is committed to providing passports to anyone who wants it within a reasonable timeframe and at an affordable price.
The Nigerian Immigration Service received 1.5 million passport applications in 2023, and Edo State ranked fifth among states with the highest volume of passport applications.
The government is opening more front desk offices to increase registration centers and reduce waiting times.
While Nigeria’s passport ranking has improved, it is still among the least powerful in Africa, according to the 2022 Henley Passport Index.
