Gbenga Raheem, the husband of Omobolanle, a female lawyer that was shot and killed by an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi, narrated how his pregnant wife’s life was taken.
On Monday, Gbenga welcomed sympathizers in his home located in Lagos Ajah when he told the harrowing tale of what transpired on Christmas day.
According to PUNCH Metro, Omobolanle and some family members were travelling from an eatery when ASP Vandi opened fire at their vehicle.
The deceased was rushed to a hospital where she was pronounced dead – Omobolanle was 41 years old with one child and seven months pregnant at the time of her death.
According to reports, Vandi has been part of the police force for 33 years and worked at the Ajiwe Police Station in Ajah, Lagos State.
Voice recordings obtained by one of our correspondents show the lawyers who visited the bereaved family.
The victim’s husband, Gbenga, said, “On December 25, my wife, nieces, nephews, and cousins, who had come for the holiday, all went to church. On our way back, my wife said since it was Christmas Day, we should take everyone out, so, we went to a supermarket at Abraham Adesanya, then to Domino’s Pizza.
“After that, we headed towards Ajah to do a U-turn to come back to Abraham Adesanya. When we took the U-turn, we saw policemen stopping some vehicles. As we approached them, they said we should stop, and in the process, we heard a loud sound on my wife’s side window. All of a sudden, I saw blood gushing out of her chest.
“I immediately ran out; my sister-in-law, who was also with us, ran out and held the policeman; he cocked his gun at her too. Talking to him was pointless, so I went to see if anything could be done; I saw my wife gasping for breath, and by that time, my sister-in-law had brought the policeman into the car and pushed him into the front seat.
“We drove to a hospital but they said they couldn’t handle it; we eventually took her to Grandville Hospital, where she was confirmed dead. The policemen took her body and put it in the truck; they wanted me to follow them but I said I needed to go and settle my children.”
NaijNaira learnt that Bolanle had recently switched from legal practice to pursuing property law.
Prior to her tragic death, she occupied the position of Chief Executive Officer at Croston Homes and co-founder for City Building; a real estate and property development company.
She also regularly attended Redeemed Christian Church of God, Olive Tree Parish in Banana Island, Ikoyi.
Following this incident, the Inspector-General of Police Usman Baba issued an official statement calling for swift prosecution against all police members involved in her killing.
Adejobi said, “The IGP, who described the incident as unfortunate and sad, has ordered speedy investigation and prosecution of the officers responsible for the ugly and unprofessional act, which doesn’t portray the Nigeria Police Standard Operating Procedure and core values.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, said the police would carry out a reappraisal of its rules of engagement in a bid to put an end to such avoidable incidents.
On Monday, the chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association’s Lagos State chapter, Ikechukwu Uwanna, spoke out.
He revealed that NBA President Yakubu Maikyau and his executive committee were monitoring the situation.
The NBA demanded that the police reveal details of the policeman who was responsible for killing a pregnant woman in Lagos.
Moreover, members of the union had already met with both Ajiwe Police Station’s DPO and Lagos State Commissioner of Police in order to ensure justice prevailed.
The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, responded to the tragic story of a husband who narrated how a policeman killed his pregnant wife by saying that his administration would swiftly seek justice.
Through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Gboyega Akosile, the governor underlined that such violence against its citizens was not acceptable and wouldn’t be tolerated.
The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, strongly condemned the death of Bolanle Raheem at the hands of a policeman in Lagos.
Raheem was reportedly pregnant when she was killed. Atiku urged for more police reforms to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future and also called for speedy justice in order to serve as a deterrence from it.
He said that justice delayed is justice denied and this should not be the case here.
This death has sparked outrage among Nigerians who are demanding justice and an end to the prevalence of violence.
