Shashi Tharoor isn’t mincing words—he wants India to hit back if Donald Trump’s new tariffs stay in place. If the US insists on a 50% levy on Indian goods, Tharoor believes India should match it without hesitation – www.naijnaira.com reports.
Speaking to NDTV, the Congress MP questioned why the US gave China a longer deadline to adjust, but cornered India with barely three weeks. “We should start with diplomacy, but if that fails, we respond equally,” he said. India currently charges 17% on US imports, but Tharoor says raising it to 50% would send the right message.
The US says the additional tariffs are a penalty for India’s continued import of Russian oil. India calls that logic unfair and points out that many other countries—including China—are doing the same.
When asked about cutting back on Russian oil, Tharoor didn’t flinch. “If it’s cheaper and helps India’s energy security, we’ll take it,” he said.
Trade talks have stalled, partly due to India’s refusal to open its agriculture sector wider to US firms. PM Modi made it clear where he stands: “India will not compromise the interests of farmers, livestock holders, or fishermen. I’m willing to pay the personal cost.”
