There are lot of things to be excited about in the iPhone 12. It comes with an old design that has been modernized for this decade, a very vibrant display, new iOS skin and processing power and improved camera system.
The 12 mini comes with everything that the 12 comes with but only differs in the display size which is 5.4-inches as against the 12’s 6.1 inches and that makes it 100 US Dollars less expensive.
The unboxing experience though is nothing to be excited about.
Immediately you open the box it comes in with, you will see the phone with its screen facing down.
Apart from the phone, the only thing that comes with it is a USB C to lightning cable.
So, they assume you already have a wall brick to charge the device and didn’t want any of their accessories to contribute to environmental challenges.
What i don’t seems to understand is that the cable they shipped the device with isn’t compatible with the charger most iPhone users have. Only those that bought the new iPad has a compatible charger.
Anyways, you have an options to get it for a little less than $70 if you think you will need it.
Over the course of this write up, i will discuss everything you need to know about the new devices but first let’s talk about the price.
How Much is iPhone 12 & 12 Mini in Nigeria
The 12 starts at 400,000 Naira while the 12 mini starts at 350,000 Naira for the base models; 4GB, 64GB storage.
This is by no means a new design, because we have seen it on an iPhone before. However, it has been refined to meet up with the standard of flagships of this decade.
I am talking about the flat design, from the sides to the screen and even the bump has been reduced a lot compare to the previous generations including the immediate predeccessor (iPhone 11).
The sides, top and bottom are so flat that you can easily makes it stand or rest on any of them.
While the display is protected by a ceramic shield which is simply an hardened glass with crystalline structures across its surface to make it 4 times stronger or shatter proof and less vulnerable to scratch, the side frame are made out of aluminum.
There is nothing at the top of the phone, at the upper right hand side of the device is the power button and the 5G antenna at the lower right hand side.
On the left hand side are the volume up and volume down buttons and the sim card tray. At the bottom of the device are the speaker grills and the lightning port for charging.
Just in case you are wondering, the notch is still there with all the component and technology that makes their Face ID, the industry’s best.
At the back are the dual 12MP standard and ultra wide camera set up that have seen a little bit of improvement over its predecessor.
It is IP68 certified and which means the device is water resistance up to 2m and for 30 minutes.
This is the best display on any iPhone. It is a 6.1-inches OLED panel with 1080P resolution (1170 x 2532 pixels or FHD+). Comparing that to the iPhone 11’s 720P LCD, it is very easy to sight the difference because it is just so clear.
The above display combinations makes it more brighter and gives it more contrast. It’s pixel density are also way better than it has ever been on any iPhone and guess what? It is HDR certified.
There is still a big notch cut out on the new iPhone with components for a secure Face ID or face unlock technology.
The display is protected by what is way stronger than glass; the ceramic shield. This shield is made out of glass and crystal structure to makes it shatter proof and scratch proof.
The bezels around the display have become more thinner and flat compare to the previous generations.
Well, i will start with, this incredible smartphone has another great thing in its positive column.
This new generation iPhones are powered by A14 bionic chip which is fastest processor in any smartphone globally and also the first 5nm chip in any smart phone.
The A14 chip comprises of 6-cores CPU, 4-cores GPU and 4GB pf RAM (random access memory).
There are options to choose from 64GB, 128GB and 256GB internal memory but there is no card slot for expansion.
It is fast and smooth. It is a shame that it doens’t come with 120 hertz refresh rate as it would have improved it user experience.
Both the 12 and 12 mini comes with a dual set up camera at the back. Both of which are 12MP.
The standard camera is a 12MP lens with f/1.6 aperture, 7-element lens, 26mm focal length, Optical Image Stabilization and 100% focus pixels.
Then, we have the ultra-wide lens which is a 12MP ultra-wide sensor with f/2.4 aperture, 5-element lens, 13mm focal length and 120 degrees field of view.
As you can see, this is a great duo camera system set up which can shoot video in 4K up to 60 frame per second (24, 30 and 60 fps), support smart HDR and Dolby vision HDR.
Overall, the camera system here is a bit of an improvement over what was on the 11th iteration of the iPhones.
There are even more camera improvement on the 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max that you might find amazing and useful such as Lidar, 2x telephoto on the 12 pro and 2.5x telephoto on the 12 pro max.
Also the main sensor on the Max is bigger than what we have ever seen on any iPhone before.
Its front facing camera is a 12MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 23mm focal length. It can also shoot video in 4K up to 60 fps and in 1080p up to 120 fps. It uses Gyro-EIS.
Battery & Charging Technology
The non-removable 2815 mAh Li-Ion battery capacity support fast charging up to 20W which can deliver 50% in 30 minutes with the USB-C to lightning cable.
But it also comes with a magnetic wireless charging which can deliver 15W charging speed.
The technology is called MagSafe and it is not only for charging. It can also be used for payment using Apple card.
There is no charging brick in the box. So, if you are new iPhone user, you will need to order for a charger along side the device.
The battery capacity is about average. Meaning it won’t last you through out a whole day except you are a light user.
It supports all generation networks up to 5G. However, to safe battery and load on your processor, the 5G network is only actually turned On and used when you are in a 5G area and downloading heavy files that can be downloaded faster on a 5G network.
It support WiFi 6 with dual band, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, NFC.
Face ID is still there and functions as the predecessor, there is support for stereo speaker, accelerometer, gyro, proximity, compass and barometer.
The devices are available in Black, White, Red, Green and Blue color.
Overall, when compared with the iPhone 11, we have a better display quality, battery life and performance is about the same, there is a little bit improvement in the camera system and the build and design quality saw a complete over haul with its flat sides compared to the 11s.
There is no headphone jack which means you might want to get yourself the Airpod or the Airpods Max or maybe both.
They sight environmental concerns for not including the charging brick in the box along side the phone.
iPhone 12 becomes the first Apple flagship phone with 5G technology which is a cool addition.
But there is one thing missing that i was really expecting to see; a 120 Hz refresh rate display.
So what do you think of the 2020 iPhone flagships, from their price in Nigeria to their functionality and performance? Let the discussion continue in the comment.
