iPhone SE 2020 is the latest Apple budgeted smartphone for the year 2020.
The device has been on the rumour mill for a long time and at a point, speculations started referring to it as iPhone 9.
Today being 15th of April 2020, Apple unveiled the device.
From the looks and the specifications, this appears to be an updated version of the iPhone 8 smartphone released in September 2017.
It comes with same design as iPhone 8 but in different colours.
In this post, we are going to look into the features of the smartphone and also be comparing it with iPhone 8.

The design of this iPhone looks pretty good but not new.
We are expecting to see a new modern design but we ended up seeing the same design used on the iPhone 8.
This is why it looks like an iPhone 8 at first glance. If not for the different colour painting, you can easily misplace this phone with iPhone 8.
It comes with the same circular camera module as the iPhone 8, same Led flash placement and even same dimensions.
That aside, the back is made from glass and it has an aluminium frame.
This build material are always solid but a gorilla glass on the back would have been more better.
The smartphone is very light in weight, it weighs just 148grams.
It has 7.3mm thickness, 67.3mm width size and 138.4mm length size.
Of course, with this dimensions, you expect the device to be compact and sturdy in the hand.
This is the same dimensions the iPhone 8 has, so if you have used iPhone 8 before, this is how this new iPhone is going to feel like.
The device also has IP67 rating which means it can resist dust and water.
It can be submerged in a 1m of water for 30mins and nothing will happen to it.
iPhone 8 has all this features.
You can get the SE 2020 in three colours which are Black, White and Red.
Coming to the front side, the smartphone comes with a huge chin and bezels.
You can see the thumb print on the chin and a single selfie camera plus speaker overhead.
This leaves the device with a 4.7inch size that produces just a resolution of 750 x 1334 pixels.
It uses a Retina IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that can generate 16M colours.
The huge chin and bezels made the device to come with a screen to body ratio of 65.4% and 16:9 aspect ratio.
Colour reproduction will be acceptable as it has a 326 pixel per inch density.
The display doesn’t come with a Corning Gorilla Glass protection but it comes with some features that is quite solid.
The display features an Ion-strengthened glass and oleophobic coating.
It also comes with Wide color gamut, True-tone colour and 625 nits max brightness.
This device having 625nits brightness means that the display is pretty bright and can be viewed under sun light.
In comparison with the iPhone 8, the device comes with this same display features.
Same display technology, same display size, same resolution and even same display features like 625nits maximum brightness, Ion-strengthened glass, oleophobic coating and Wide color gamut.
You can see that we aren’t mistaken when we call this device an iPhone 8 rebranded version.
Hardware and Software
Under the hood, does this iPhone comes with the same hardware and software components as the iPhone 8?
Let’s find out.
The SE 2020 comes with an Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset which uses a Hexa-core processor with a speed of 2.65GHz for the first two cores and 1.8GHz for the last four cores.
Surprisingly, this is the same chipset used on the iPhone 11 series and that means that the SE 2020 would be pretty fast because Apple’s A13 Bionic chipset is well optimized.
The device is running on iOS 13 operating system with Apple’s 4-core graphics GPU for gaming.
As with the Apple’s tradition, they don’t normally reveal the RAM capacity of their smartphones.
So we don’t know the RAM capacity of this smartphone but surely, it would be known soon.
It comes with a three storage versions which are 64-giga byte ROM, 128-giga byte ROM and 256-giga byte ROM.
Without needing anyone to tell you, the smartphone will be available in three variants.
There is no option to extend the storage with a memory card though. In comparison with the iPhone 8, this is where we found an upgrade.
The older iPhone 8 is powered by Apple’s A11 Bionic chipset (10 nm). It uses a Hexa-core processor and runs on iOS 11, though upgradable to iOS 13.4.
The iPhone 8 smartphone comes with a 2-giga byte RAM and 64-giga byte ROM or a 2-giga byte RAM and 256-giga byte ROM.
With the SE 2020 having almost all the resemblance of the iPhone 8, we guess the smartphone might come with a 2-giga RAM and 3-giga byte RAM.
In the camera aspect, SE 2020 comes with a single rear camera of 12-mega pixels with f/1.8 aperture.
There is no depth sensor here but the smartphone can take a good portrait images, how you asked?
Well, Apple made use of a feature called “monocular depth sensing”, which uses machine learning to detect depth and faces.
This is not the first time we are seeing this feature, we first saw it on the Pixels smartphones.
SE 2020 really benefited a lot from the A13 Bionic chipset that it uses.
The smartphone can take a good picture with improved Smart HDR, all made possible by the chipset. The rear camera also features cinematic video stabilization.
You can record videos in 4K at 60fps with stereo audio.
It has a dual led flash to enhance your night shooting experience but the iPhone 8 has a quad cameras.
The front of the SE 2020 houses a 7-mega pixels camera for selfies or video calls with f/2.2 aperture.
It’s front camera can also take portrait images with the same features the rear camera has.
Recording videos can be in 1080p at 30fps and it supports electronic image stabilization.
This is the same camera present in the iPhone 8 but the new SE 2020 will take a better picture.
Battery and Connectivity
Coming to the battery, we don’t actually know the amount of mAh powering the smartphone.
This is normal for Apple devices but they said that the battery supports 18W fast charging.
Be sure of getting 50% in 30 mins. It also supports Qi wireless charging. The smartphone uses a thumb print for security.
To recall, the iPhone 8 has a 1,821 mAh battery with 15W fast charging.
This is likely the same battery capacity that will be powering the iPhone, but time will tell.
Connectivity options includes 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS and NFC.
So that’s it about the 2020 version of iPhone SE specs, price in Nigeria and features.
This is a rebranded iPhone 8 with improved hardware and camera, nothing more.
If you have the iPhone 8, should you buy this?
Yes, buy it because it has a faster processor and a shaper camera than the iPhone 8.
But we wish Apple would have touched or tweaked the design a little bit to differentiate it with the iPhone 8 physically.
