Talking of a more powerful processor with neural engine, its camera capability for photography threw the iPhone X out of the window and yes it is much more intelligent thanks to more and more integration of AI into smartphones as we have seen with pretty much all flagships that has been launched in 2018.

I have watched lot of camera test of the XS Max on YouTube and to say it is amazing is nothing but an understatement.

See, i am not just talking about its ability to take crisp pictures but also its video shooting capabilities.

I am sure tech YouTubers have also started working on comparison with the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL that Google unveiled yesterday.

To take less of your time, i think we better dive into things that really matters. I mean like the specs, features and price of the largest iPhone yet.

iPhone XS Max Specs & Features

Let’s start from the beginning shall we? September 12 2018 was a great day at California for the Cupertino based tech, innovation and smartphone giant.

The new set of iPhones weren’t the only gadgets that were unwrapped. We also got the first look at the Watch Series 4 with ground breaking technology especially in health department.

Design and Display

Like i said earlier, it looks exactly the same as last year’s iPhone X but it is much more than that in the inside.

With a screen size of 6.5-inch, XS Max has the biggest display on an iPhone yet. Nay! It is not just big, it is also among flagships with the brightest, sharpest and colorful display thanks to the 458 PPI pixel density, 1 million to 1 contrast ratio, 3.3 million pixels, 1242 x 2688 pixels resolution packed into its super retina OLED display.

Yes, the notch is still there packing the proximity sensor, infra red camera, ambient light, dot projector, microphone, flood illuminator, speaker and front facing camera. Inside are combinations behind one of the most secured Face ID technology in the world.

Thanks to the notch, the device has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and 84.4% screen to body ratio.

XS Max from iPhone utilizes glass (that Apple called the most durable) on the front and at the rear. The sides are made out of surgical grade stainless steel (as Apple called it).

Thanks to been IP68 certified, the biggest iPhone is liquid and dust resistant. Talking about liquid resistance, this is not just water as Apple said they tested it on couple other liquid that are even more damaging and can cause corrosion easily than water like salt water, tea, beer, wine and juice to mention a few.

Also, if you happened to suddenly find yourself at the bottom of an ocean or swimming pool that is 2m deep with your phone on you and were able to get out before 30 minutes, rest assured that nothing will happen to your phone.

There is no rare, front or in display fingerprint scanner here. You are gonna have to manage the Face ID for the main time. There is possibility the next iPhones will feature the in-display fingerprint.

Processor, Software & Storage

Apple has once again pushed the envelop by creating the most fastest, innovative and intelligent processing power in the world.

While the A11 bionic chip featured on the 2017’s iPhone X is still giving the Snapdragon 845 SoC that 2018 Android flagships used a fight of its life, Apple has created a even more powerful and capable A12 bionic chip and put it in the XS Max.

The A12 bionic chip is the first 7 nanometer chip in the world packing 6.9 billions transistors and can process up to 5 trillion operations in a second. That right there is a huge increment from 600 billion operations the A11 can process in a second.

This chip is a machine with 3 major functioning parts. There is the CPU, a fusion system that uses 6 cores (quad core for efficiency and dual core for performance) making it more faster and battery efficient than the A11 chip.

Second part is the GPU that uses 4 cores to make sure this device deliver the best graphics performance ever seen on any smartphone. And the last part is the neural engine which is the secret behind the so much intelligence of the XS Max. It handles everything machine learning and smart computing software.

Talking of software, XS Max runs on iOS 12. And moving on to the storage or memory department, the device uses 4GB RAM, and there are 64GB, 256GB and 512GB internal storage options.

Battery, Camera & Connectivity

There was no number in mAh attributed to the battery during the launch event but Apple did say it can last 1 hour:30 minutes more than the iPhone X. It was however later confirmed that it uses 3174 mAh battery and 1.5 hours improvement over the iPhone X isn’t entirely true (its less).

On the camera department, there is a dual camera at the rear and a single camera on the front.

The dual rear camera is a combination of 12MP telephoto and 12MP wide angle lenses. The wide angle camera feature OIS (optical image stabilization), 1.4um pixels, auto focus and f/1.8 aperture while the telephoto camera utilizes f/2.4 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and 2x optical zoom.

For great photography in low light, Apple has integrated a true tone flash. Other features of the rear camera are HDR with zero shutter lag, Adjustable depth, Bokeh effect. Adjustable depth field allows you to decide how much blur you want the background to be and this is after taking the picture.

The selfie camera is 7MP featuring f/2.2 aperture. It works with IR camera and dot projector to create depth in portrait mode photos and for Face ID.

Rear cameras can record video in 1080p @ 30, 60, 120 and 240 fps, 2160p @ 24, 30, 60 fps.

Connectivity wise, it is the first iPhone to support DSDS (Dual Sim Dual Standby) or eSIM depending on your country. Its support is extended to Bluetooth 5.0, USB Type-C, Apple pay and wireless charging.

It’s definitely one of the best if not THE best smartphone out there today, but it’s definitely got the price tag to match… I’ll have to wait a while until it comes down in price a bit before I can actually afford one.
