Israeli troops intercepted a large flotilla carrying medicine and food to Gaza on Wednesday, detaining passengers that included climate activist Greta Thunberg – www.naijnaira.com reports.
Reuters verified footage from the Israeli foreign ministry showing soldiers surrounding Thunberg on the deck of one of the vessels.
The Global Sumud Flotilla set out with more than 40 boats and nearly 500 people, among them lawmakers, lawyers, and human rights campaigners.
Organizers said their goal was to break the naval blockade on Gaza, calling the interception “a war crime” and accusing Israeli forces of targeting the Maria Cristina boat.
Turkey condemned the raid as “an act of terror,” while protests erupted across Italy in solidarity with the passengers.
Officials in Spain and Ireland demanded Israel safeguard the rights of everyone detained, with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Harris calling it “a peaceful mission to expose a humanitarian catastrophe.”
The flotilla was 70 nautical miles from Gaza when communications were jammed and multiple vessels boarded by Israeli troops.
Israel’s navy had warned the group days earlier, offering to deliver the aid through approved channels, but organizers refused, insisting they would continue attempts to reach Gaza.
