Jonathan Warns Against One-Party Drift in Nigeria

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has expressed concern over what he describes as a gradual move toward a one-party system in the country, warning that such a direction could destabilize the nation’s fragile democracy.

Speaking during a memorial lecture held in Abuja in honour of the late nationalist Chief Edwin Clark, Jonathan cautioned against eroding political plurality through behind-the-scenes tactics, according to a report by Punch.

He pointed out that while a one-party system worked in countries like Tanzania under Julius Nyerere, it was a deliberate national decision—not an unintended outcome of partisan dominance.

“If we must, as a nation, adopt a one-party system, then it must be designed, planned by experts—and we must know what we are getting into. But if we arrive at it through the back door by political manipulations, then we are heading for a crisis,” Jonathan stated.

He added that Nigeria’s ethnic and religious diversity demands a more open political arrangement that respects all voices. Jonathan also recommended the establishment of an annual lecture in Chief Clark’s honour to preserve his vision for national unity and equity.

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, also addressed attendees. He voiced concern over the growing hardship in the country, saying that the sacrifices made by early nationalists were “already in vain” due to persistent insecurity, poverty, and economic challenges in rural areas.

Former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, who chaired the event, echoed calls for national unity, stating that genuine progress is only possible when the interests of the country come before individual ambition.

The memorial brought together prominent figures who urged reflection on Nigeria’s democratic health and reaffirmed the need to safeguard political diversity.
