The upcoming governorship election in Kogi has caused a rift between the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the People Democratic Party (PDP) over the use of delegates to elect their candidates.
While both parties have opted for the indirect primary method, the APC’s Abubakar Audu-Faleke political group has rejected the delegate system and called for a direct primary election.
The group alleges that the delegate list submitted to the national working committee (NWC) of the party is “compromised” and that congresses have not been held to pick delegates.
Meanwhile, in the PDP, there are reports of attempts to favor Dino Melaye as the party’s flag bearer, with insiders claiming that he may be allowed to nominate 60% of the delegates.
However, elders and stakeholders in Kogi PDP have rejected this move and called for the use of only the “original” delegates list from the 21 LGAs of the state.
Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the PDP, has denied having a preferred candidate in the primary election and urged all aspirants to be given the opportunity to compete fairly.
