The Federal Government announced plans to demolish 700 properties for the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Initial estimates suggested demolishing 1,500 houses.

However, strategic planning reduced the number of properties affected.

Lagos State Controller of Works, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, shared, “Instead of having to demolish about 1,500 houses, we took the most economical route. Now we are left with less than 700 houses to be demolished.”

According to The Guardian Nigeria, the project is now moving forward with fewer demolitions than initially planned.

Mrs. Kesha addressed concerns over the project’s alignment and property demolition.

She explained that previous alignments are no longer relevant, and the government now focuses on the most practical and cost-effective route.

Minister of Works, David Umahi, discussed the project’s potential to reshape transportation in Nigeria.

He said the highway will relieve traffic congestion and incorporate various transport modes.

Umahi also revealed that a 12-meter rail line will run through the middle of the road, with plans for future train stations and developments.

The construction of Section 2 faces challenges due to industrial infrastructure, including the Dangote refinery.

To overcome these challenges, the government is building large flyovers with spans of 60 meters, 41.6 meters, and additional shorter spans to bypass the refinery.

Umahi mentioned that the government is also progressing with projects in Cross River and Akwa Ibom, with construction soon to begin.

He discussed the Sokoto-Badagry legacy project, where officials are exploring options to address the challenge of river crossings.

Umahi stressed the importance of these interconnected legacy projects for regional development.

These projects aim to benefit every part of the country, leaving no region behind.

Finally, Umahi warned against misusing the infrastructure projects, stressing the importance of responsible use and maintenance.
