The Lagos State House of Assembly has confirmed 15 out of the second list of 18 nominees sent by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for ratification and confirmation. This brings the total number of the governor’s proposed cabinet members confirmed by the House to 37.
Among the newly confirmed cabinet members-designates are Professor Akin Abayomi, the immediate-past Commissioner for Health, and Mr Gbenga Omotoso, the immediate-past Commissioner for Information and Strategy. These two individuals were initially rejected by the Assembly during the first screening but have now been approved.
However, not all nominees were successful in their confirmation. Sam Egube, the former Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, and Engr. Olalere Odusote, the former Commissioner for Energy, were both rejected for the second time by the Assembly.
The confirmation of a new nominee, Tolani Akibu, has been stepped down by the House for further review.
The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, initially sent his first list of proposed cabinet members to the Assembly on July 28. After four days of screening, 22 out of the 39 names were confirmed, while 17 were rejected. Speculations arose about a possible rift between the Speaker of the House, Mudashiru Obasa, and the governor.
To address the issue, members of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), the apex leadership body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, intervened and urged the governor and the Speaker to find a resolution. Following the meeting with the GAC, Sanwo-Olu submitted another list of 18 nominees, which included 12 of the previously rejected individuals and six new ones.
The Fatai Mojeed-led ad hoc committee, responsible for screening the first batch, referred the new nominees to report back on September 7. On Thursday, September 7, the Assembly confirmed 15 out of the 18 nominees.
The 37 confirmed cabinet members-designates are now ready to take on their respective roles in the Lagos State government.
