The music world is mourning the passing of legendary Drifters singer Charlie Thomas, who died from liver cancer at 85 years old.

Known for hits such as ‘Save The Last Dance for Me’, Sweets for My Sweet and When My Little Girl Is Smiling, the tenor was a major part of The Drifters for more than 60 years, earning him an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

Born in Lynchburg, Virginia on April 7 1937 to parents Reverend Willis and Lucinda Thomas, Charlie was performing with doo-wop group Five Crowns at Harlem’s Apollo Theatre when they received critical acclaim.

As a result, George Treadwell – original Drifters manager – signed them up and they went on to release multiple hit records over 6 decades together, right until when the pandemic shut down the concert circuit.

He has since been met with an outpouring of tributes from fans all over the media, along with his surviving family members; wife Rita Thomas; daughters Crystal Thomas Wilson and Victoria Green; sons Charlie Jr., Michael Sidbury and Brian Godfrey; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
