The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has announced that it will take action against loan applications that harass customers and will request Google to remove these apps from the Play Store.
This decision comes in response to the ongoing harassment and defamation experienced by Nigerians from digital lenders.
The FCCPC had previously directed loan apps to register with the commission, and 180 apps have received approval to operate in the country.
Google has also stated that loan apps will require regulatory approval to be available on its app store.
The FCCPC CEO, Babatunde Irukera, stated that the commission is prepared to permanently shut down the activities of these apps.
He emphasized the need for evidence before taking action, as some loan apps engaging in harassment are not on Google but are using alternative channels such as WhatsApp and APK.
Consumers are advised to only use approved loan apps to ensure easier identification and sanctioning.
