Everton manager David Moyes was vocal in his disappointment after Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over his side, claiming that the winning goal, scored by Diogo Jota, should have been ruled out due to an offside position from Luis Diaz in the build-up.
Moyes argued that Diaz was interfering with Everton defender James Tarkowski and suggested that the offside decision was “quite easy to give.”
The goal ultimately stood, and Liverpool took another significant step toward winning the 2024-25 Premier League title. According to Sky Sports, there was no way the decision could have been overturned.
The controversy stems from the Premier League’s offside regulations, which state that a player is penalized if they impede an opponent’s ability to play the ball or interfere in other specific ways.
However, officials at Stockley Park reviewed the incident and decided that Diaz did not obstruct Tarkowski’s ability to play the ball. As a result, they upheld the on-field decision, allowing the goal to stand.
Everton remains 15th in the table, 14 points clear of relegation-threatened Ipswich Town, but their loss at Anfield means they have a lot of work to do in their fight to secure safety in the Premier League this season.
