Former Liverpool and Barcelona Striker Luis Suarez has announced his retirement from international football.

He will play his final match for Uruguay in their World Cup qualifier against Paraguay in Montevideo this Friday.

During an emotional press conference, the 37-year-old tearfully confirmed his decision, reflecting on his illustrious 17-year international career that began in 2007.

Suarez emphasized that his decision to retire was made with peace of mind, knowing he had given everything to his national team.

He expressed pride in choosing to step aside while still able, rather than being forced out by injury or age.

Suarez also revealed that his desire for his children to witness his final match in front of Uruguayan fans influenced his decision to continue playing after the 2024 Copa America.

Suarez will retire as Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer, with 69 goals in 142 appearances.

He played a crucial role in a golden era for the national team helping them win the Copa America in 2011.

Despite his on-field brilliance, Suarez’s career was also marked by controversies, including a notorious handball incident in the 2010 World Cup and a biting incident involving Italy’s Giorgio Chiellini in 2014.
