Carlyle Group Inc, a US private equity firm, has entered the race to acquire a minority stake in Manchester United.

The Glazer family, who currently own the Premier League club, are considering Carlyle’s proposal along with offers from other investment firms such as Sixth Street and Ares.

Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim Bin Hamad Al Thani and British billionaire Jim Ratcliffe have also tabled offers in previous rounds of bidding.

Despite initial speculation that discussions over a minority investment were a tactic to drive up the price for a full sale, the idea of the Glazers remaining as owners is gaining more credence.

Carlyle, with assets of over $370 billion under management, has previously invested in UK companies such as the RAC breakdown recovery service and Addison Lee.

The Glazer family launched a formal sale process last year and were set to welcome a third round of bidding this month.

Fans have criticized the ownership for loading debt onto the club, which last won the Premier League in 2013.
